Who is Lord Ganesh?

Lord Shiva left his pregnant wife Parvati in their palace , while he went off to discover the world.He returned years later, to find his wife with a young man in her arms. Enraged he drew his sword and cut off his head! “ you just cut off the head of our child “Parvati sobbed!“ you’ve been away so long - our child has grown into a man!”

Full of remorse, Shiva got down in his knees and begged the gods for forgiveness - asking that their child should be revived! They told him that he could have the head of the next creature that appeared. This was a baby elephant and this Ganesh was given his head! He has traditionally been considered the god of good luck, wisdom and success.
